Englische Übersetzung

Alice was standing in the lobby,
around her a couple of cousins,
the hours ticked by in sultry heat,
beer served unchilled in glasses,
the Coke was flat and tepid
– but Alice was perfectly happy
if anyone turned up at night.

The keys were all she had to cling to –
rooms 11 to 108.
So if a few in between were missing,
she really couldn’t care less.
And very quietly Alice is thinking
back to her last rendezvous
when she was allowed out dancing
at Chez Jacques in Old Bayou.

Frogs croaking in the swamps,
warm winds sweeping distant places near
and out on the veranda Alice is looking
more beautiful than ever.

She’s dancing on the old plank floor,
it could hardly be wilder,
and pretty-boy Petit Jean
tempestuously pulls her against him.
Takes her out to the shore,
takes her to some empty place,
lays her down soppily, softly,
on the spot where he ardently kisses her.

Frogs croaking in the swamps …

After that dark night on the shore
Alice could no longer find the keys –
the cousins in her lobby
made life tough for her,
kept on nagging,
that’s not how you chill beer properly,
and the Coke will also stay tepid
and love makes you old.
