9.000 NÄCHTE (2023)
For our “Silver Jubilee” in 2020, we had planned to release an album of what we felt were unfinished songs. All had been released, one way or another. Staying home for covid gave us a lot of time to do work on this idea. We chose not to release a physical album, as it was all about an app we specially developed (available on app store and google play) that allows listeners to immerse in a new way of listening to music. A simple version of the music is available on all streaming platforms. By the way … 9000 nights are almost 25 years.

KIRSCHENZEIT (2018)
Time was ripe for a new way to put our songs on tape. So we took a bunch of ideas to the old Hörspielstudio at Funkhaus Nalepastraße, where we rehearsed, arranged and recorded eleven backing tracks in two days, adding horns and strings in two more. Then we wrote the lyrics for songs about what we feel is worth going on a barricade for. The title is the German translation for “Le temps des Cerises”, a song associated with the Paris Commune of 1871.
CD/LP available @ HIPPIE SHOP.

BIESTER (2014)
Challenging ourselves, we were joined by percussionists and drummers on every song. To begin with, we had meant to record an album of covers of “classic” instrumentals (tunes by the Allman Brothers, Bill Laswell, Frank Zappa, Mulatu Astatqé, and more), but then a few of our own songs, and a tune or two we picked up on the road crept in … just by chance this album marked the beginning of a new era: up until now (2014), we rarely played without percussion and never with drums. Now we do.

TITUS TRÄUMT – 17 HIPPIES FOR CHILDREN (2013)
Our first – and so far – our only album for children, recorded and released in 2013: “Titus träumt” (Titus dreams). Creating the album was the best fun we’ve had in ages. It had all us in stitches. We didn’t try very hard to be educationally valuable … it was all about recapturing how much fun it can be to be a kid! We fooled around, tried new things … ‘relived the child in us’. We still intend to release the English version …

The third in a trio of studio albums. JD Foster from NYC joined us as guest producer, along our longtime studio wizard Klaus Wagner. HEIMLICH (2007)
We wanted to do something differently, so in 2007 we started recording 12 new songs in our office, turning the place effectively into our own studio. Improvising with borrowed technology, we started writing more original songs, slowly moving away from playing traditional music “our way”. “Deine Tränen”, and “Just like you” have become favourites in our live shows. As it happened, this was the first of three albums that feature this way of recording.

17 HIPPIES LIVE IN BERLIN (2006)
For our 10th anniversary we released a live album (along with a DVD, featuring footage of different projects of ours) of our live show played at or living room, the Berlin “Kesselhaus”, where we still play our annual “Hippie-Haus-Tanz”. The album was originally supposed to be called “The greatest show on Earth”, but after a letter from “Barnum & Beiley” we renamed it.

17 HIPPIES PLAY GUITAR (2006)
This 2006 album documents an experiment that went very right! When our favourite guitarist Marc Ribot liked the idea of joining us on stage for a show in Cologne, a dream came true. Alongside our friend Jakob Ilja of “Element of Crime”, who had played with us on many occasions, we rocked the house at the “Stadtgarten”. Recorded live by the WDR (German public radio).

HARDCORE TROBADORS (2004)
6 songs, jointly composed, arranged and played by our French friends HURLEMENTS D’LÉO and us. Again we hired a studio in Berlin, and this time spent three weeks with 20 musicians cooped up in Berlin, bang in the middle of summer. The six tracks were then exclusively released on the Wagram label in France (also available in the 17 Hippies shop).
The 12″ single is an impulsive mixture of the traditions of both groups: urban, Eastern European and chansonésque.

IFNI (2004)
It was time for a proper studio album, so in 2004 we spent a few weeks almost living in one. We started off recording live (“Frau von Ungefähr”), and later learned to dub instruments to live backing tracks, such as the beautiful “Valser nel bosco”, and the somewhat ska-esk “Cube”. We also found time to do a cover of “Saint behind the glass” by Los Lobos. The press said: “Musically, there´s everything in it which they could possibly get their hands on. They whirl you through Romanian Sirba, clarinets race through Klezmer melodies, a Cajun song is performed in a very strange local German dialect. Rules are turned around and over, the outcome being wonderful, rather strange music, which for the first time is not only orchestral, but also sung. The entire album is a warming highlight…“

IFNI IFNI (french edition) (2004)

17 HIPPIES PLAY SEXY AMBIENT HIPPIES (2003)
To something completely different … recorded live at the “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” in 2002 this album is a “jam band goes film score” rendition of a sideline project of ours. Featuring guest musicians from the electronic scene, we improvised the soundtrack to an imaginary film noir, throwing in fragments of our repertoire. As a journalist put it: “SEXY AMBIENT HIPPIES are the GRATEFUL DEAD of world music.”

SIRBA (2002)
This album gave us a little hit in France: “Marlène”, our first ever self-written song in French, originally intended for a guest vocalist, who then couldn’t find the time to sing the song. Kiki jumped in and so became our singer. Along with two other new tracks “Vallée de Sirba” sung by Laulo, of the French band HURLEMENTS D’LEO and the instrumental version of the same tune “Eine Sirba” (recorded by ourselves in a shack in Southern France) the album was made up of tunes from the “Wer ist das?” and HALBE TREPPE albums, previously unreleased in France.

HALBE TREPPE (Original Soundtrack) (2002)
The original soundtrack to the award winning German movie of the same name by Andreas Dresen. Creating the movie and the music for it, was a singular experience. The film had no written script and was developed by the director and cast as they went along, living together for three months in 2001 on site in Frankfurt/Oder. We joined them from time to time, and some of the music was played live during shots. We created a lot of the film score in a similar way, improvising sounds and atmospheres to little story lines. Some of the music was then used during the writing of a scene to enhance the feel of what they were planning to shoot. Some tunes were randomly recorded (there were many more) and used in the editing process of the film. The only tune written after the three month process was over is “Mad Bad Cat”, our first ever song, written on request for the credit section of the movie.

BERLIN STYLE (1999)

ROCK’N’ROLL 13 (1997)
A collection of our first recordings ever, originally intended as a cassette for friends and family. When we found out, that it was cheaper to release them on a CD, we did, accidentally starting our own record company. All from 1996, some tracks were taped at the legendary Beatstudio by equally legendary Gerd Blum, who also took care of mastering. Others were recorded using a cassette recorder, capturing the swinging atmosphere of our early regular gigs at “Café Bellevue” and abord “MS Pik-As”, two West Berlin venues we have outlived. Our first regular concert at a proper venue was tracked at our favourite old “Franz-Club” on July 14th (the day after Love Parade) giving us the iconic introduction “Habt ihr alle eure Plaeauschuhe an? (“are you all wearing your platform shoes?”).
